Thomas was no one, an orphan with no past and no memories of his early life. The only clue lies in the strange birthmark on his chest, a mark that may or may not reveal his origin, but will certainly guide him to his destiny. Growing to manhood he will become a man of consequence and influence, yet the greatest gift he has to offer his people lies not in his power, but in his wisdom. As he strives to reach his potential he will face obstacles great and small and he will discover that some foes are too strong to defeat with power alone. The greatest of evils can only be stopped when those true of heart are willing to sacrifice blood, tears, and sometimes—their lives.

Crazy short and simple story with religious parable type overtones but without any real plot. Started off well in the preview but then was a simple expose with almost no plot twists and definitely no character development.Product details

Thomas Michael G Manning 9781943481088 Books Reviews
Michael is an amazing author and I literally can't wait for the nexts books to come out. As a longtime fantasy reader who was an obsessed Harry Potter fan and then Eragon, I can honestly say this is my favorite author for sure. If you like authors like him, check out Terry Mancour, who writes my SECOND favorite series. This is the only series that goes beyond 7 or so books that I think it only gets better and not repetitive. Worth every second of reading(and re reading)
I have enjoyed Manning's books so much. I read all of the books in the mageborn series in a week. I chose to read Thomas because I loved his other books so much. Thomas is a sweet story and surprisingly I liked all of the characters! While there could have been a little more depth, the story as it is, was enough. The characters are well developed with clear definition of each one's personality. I have to wonder if Thomas will really have no more adventures and just grow old until he has to pay the piper?
I usually gush over the books that Manning writes, but Thomas just did not grab me like his other books. The characters were a bit wooden and their motives less fleshed out. I admit I skimmed pages because I just wanted the story to advance. A so-so book that was well written but lacked heart. If this is a series I most likely will not bother with a second book.
Sigh where to begin, this book was written poorly and I was surprised the author who has such good series to his name actually wrote it. Poor character development, cliches and overly dramatic moments. The description of the fight scenes and the moments in between that are to build tension only left me rolling my eyes and saying hurry up.
It's written like twilight and it is not good. And parts of the story didn't make sense when put together! I will not write spoilers but come on I expected much better from one of my favorite fiction authors of today.
Felt super rushed, the characters lacked development/consistency like in chapter 13. When Delia and Islana are talking about sex, comparing it to cows and bulls, that seemed counter to Delia’s world view. Should of been expressed from the point of view of the woman. Also her metaphor about women being cows while men are bulls is antithetical to her character. As a free woman and ranger she would never see herself as a herd animal. Islana’s response is also disturbingly sexist and ‘slut’ shaming.
Also the magic system was utterly unexplained which is very out of style for this author. One of the things I live about his main continuum is how clinically most of his characters talk about their forms of magic. Almost like engineers or artists. This story just played on over used fantasy tropes and took explanations for granted.
There were also characters that pop up then exit so quickly you’re left wondering why he even bothered to introduce them. For example all of Thomas’ bullies and especially the vigilante. Like why make a Tom Cruise/Zoro/Rogue only to have him deuce put in the next chapter to babysit a kid who popped up out of no where just because the party couldn’t make it a mile outside of town without some forced plot motion.
It’s a pass for me.
I really struggled with this review because I'm an avid fan of Michael G Manning ever since his Mageborn and Illeniel series. In the end I'd rate this a solid 3 stars, maybe up to a 3.5 stars. I think the price for the book is appropriate for the length.
After confirming through several sources, I agree that this book can be read as a stand-alone story; although since I'm so used to Manning's writing my mind constantly second-guessed that this was truly a stand alone. I was endlessly trying to tie it together to the Mageborn series since it was so similar with deities, dwarves, magic, etc. I love Manning's writing style, but it was also apparent to me that this story was in fact one of his early works and lacked his overall finesse, plot/character development, and his wonderful use of humor that is so prevalent in his other works. I believe I read in his newsletter that this was written prior to the Blacksmith's Son (Book 1 Mageborn) which he had been wanting to publish for a while. This book is also shorter than his standard books.
If you're looking for a similar intro book into Manning's world, this would be a great book to start with. Unfortunately for me, it ended up being a bit distracting and difficult to get through. The characters have a lot of qualities that are similar to his other books. The world itself just seems like it could be almost a prequel prior to Mageborn but after the Illenial series, and after reading 3/4 of the book, I had to remind myself that it is truly a stand-alone, unrelated story. I just can describe it no other way than it's almost too similar to his other works while lacking the epic success found in those books.
Starts pretty good, especially with the early character development of Thomas. However, from there it's just down hill. Really the book feels like it was written based of a D&D campaign the author played.
Crazy short and simple story with religious parable type overtones but without any real plot. Started off well in the preview but then was a simple expose with almost no plot twists and definitely no character development.
