Withers Publishing is pleased to announce our new BNSF Locomotive Directory covering the motive power changes during the 2011-2012 period. Following the layout of our other locomotive directories, the book presents the data in a unit-by-unit listing, using official BNSF records. Additions, retirements, and renumberings to BNSF's locomotive fleet are all covered. This 176-page (approx.), 6x9-inch vertical-format perfect-bound (softcover) book contains the more than 200 color photos. Perfect for your camera bag or modeling workbench.

I recently purchased this book through Amazon to supplement my Robert C. Del Grosso series of "BNSF Railway Company Locomotive Reviews". These books have the same basic format as the Del Grosso series and are chocked full of information and picture examples of each model of locomotive the company had on their roster during the years presented. Although there are several websites with the same basic information on them, I always find having a physical book in my hand makes looking up the information quicker.

The book is arranged in numerical [roster] order beginning with the 100 class GP60M's, and concluding with the 9400 class SD70MAC's. Also included are the Houston Belt locomotives, those on long-term lease to BNSF, resales, and retirements being held for disposition. All the various models of locomotives are included as well as the slugs. Modifications including derated power, new designations, wrecks, and units deleted or sold within a class are also noted in the extensive text. As with any book of this sort that attempts to compile vast sums of information into a readable format, there may be errors, but I haven't found any yet. The authors should be commended for undertaking the work to begin with.

A nice feature of this book is that it gives you the numbering history of each locomotive and who it was purchased from, that is if it was not one of the pre-merger components of the BNSF. With BNSF renumbering units so often, it is hard to keep track of specific locomotives without a reference guide such as this.

The main way in which this book differs from the Del Grosso series is that there are far more picture examples for each locomotive class. When a class of locomotive exceeds about 30 units, the authors have included [in most cases] six examples of the class when appropriate numbers of variations exist within it. This helps to illustrate the diversity of the class in terms of details such as; horn placement, paint schemes, roof-top details, pilot details, and weathering. This information is extremely helpful to the modeling crowd!

These books also differ from the Del Grosso books in that they are soft cover. Color photos in the book are mainly 3/4 wedge shots taken front to back so rear details are not there. The color photos are clear, perfectly lit, and well reproduced. Considering the diminutive size of the book, photos are quite large for its format size. Technical specifications for each locomotive are included as well as the builder's frame number.

The only thing missing [in my opinion] would be notations of whether the SF and BN heritage painted units have been repainted into BNSF heritage orange schemes at the date of publication, but that's a small criticism from an obviously well put together book. I highly recommend purchasing this book. It will make a great addition to your railroad library and picks up right where the Del Grosso series left off. A 2013-2014 guide is also available from the same authors.
