Anyone? Angela Scott Stevie Mikayne Books

Wow. Someone said this was amateur? I'm an author and editor, and I can tell you this is a 5 star effort. Yes, the ending needs a bit of an "afterward, showing Tess settling in to her new circumstances. This would definitely give readers a sense of conclusion, but come on folks, the unanswered questions aren't really unanswered. The clues are all there. Use your brains. Tess figured it out, so can you.

I could use a sequel, mainly because I would like to read more of this world she is going to be living in, and how things are going to progress. But all in all, I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys disaster fiction.

Anyone? Angela Scott Stevie Mikayne Books Reviews

apocalyptic story here, with twists.

Tess is a bit of a whiny teenager, and I didn't like her very much at the beginning. But she has a kitten -- and that really engaged me! Tess's prepper dad gets her into a bomb shelter at the beginning of whatever happened (we never really know) and then leaves to find her rebel brother.

Time passes, Tess leaves and meets the mysterious Cole on her travels. His character is far more interesting! Who is he?

Crazy weather, dangerous rain, few humans left and no animals but for the kitty. Tess and Cole head out to find Tess's dad.

This makes for a quick read, but watch out -- you will be left wondering. So many questions unanswered. I thought it was a stand alone book, so I was upset with all those lingering questions. Happily, I can see she's writing a 2nd book currently. I will definitely read the continuation of this story.

Good story, good writing. Looking forward to the next book!
The Story-
It was a normal night when the booming began. Sixteen-year-old Tess was grabbed by her father and taken outside to their bomb shelter. He leaves her there to go find her brother. Left alone, with only her kitten Callie, Tess waits, but her Father never returns. She can only wonder at what has happened. After several months in the shelter Tess ventures out to find an empty world, no animal and no humans.

Where is everyone? She wanders and finally comes across Cole, a twenty something guy whose been surviving on his own. He is handsome and rugged with an amazing tattoo of wings on his back. Tess also recovers her old cell phone, and after charging it listens to a message her father left right after the disaster. He tells her where to go to find him. Even though its been months, Tess decides she's going after him. Cole vows to get her to her father.

Along the way Tess tries desperately to figure out what happened to everyone, and Cole has no answers. Strange atmospheric conditions plaque them and contaminated water makes life a challenge. When Tess's hair begins falling out she knows that if she doesn't find her father soon, she never will.

My Thoughts-
Ah, one of my favorite things, an end of the world disaster book, and this one scored points. Why? Well, I'm going to have to go into SPOILERS, so watch out. At first I thought the book would take part in the bomb shelter, but surprise, the author only has Tess in there as long as necessary to wonder what is happening in the outside world. Once she gets out the mystery of where everybody went blew my mind. I kept thinking she'd find out, but again the author does a great job of pulling the reader along and only revealing hints along the way. When a big chunk of info is revealed mid-story it only caused me to wonder, what the heck happened. We find out what happened to the people, but not what caused the disaster, at least yet. And what happened to the people and animals is awful. Great visuals.

And know the part that has me hoping for a second book- the relationship between Cole and Tess. The entire book it is obvious that there is sexual tension between the two, but Cole firmly keeps them apart and makes Tess understand that he is not going there. He says it is because he's older, but you begin to wonder. And then, nobody seems to be able to see Tess and Cole together. At first you can come up with logical reasons, but the very last chapter blows that away and left me thinking- Who or what is Cole? Loved this book and I want more. 4.5 stars!
There is so much to love about this novel! First off, I'm a huge sucker for dystopian fiction. Huge. So right off the bat, I loved the premise of this book. Second, I adore Tess and her cat and Cole. They're all so great! The story moved along at a good pace - I was never bored. I never skimmed sections. Really well done in that regard.

The things I didn't like as much This book could use a hard edit. Just to tighten up the writing and make sure all the grammar is correct. And the biggest thing I didn't like was the ending!

*********SPOILERS AHEAD*********

I felt like the ending wasn't really an ending. If there was a second book, I would have bought it immediately! But there isn't. (At least at the time I read this.) And there was no mention of one at the end either. So I'm left wondering who/what Cole is, what happened to the earth, what's going to happen to everyone, etc. A satisfying ending to a book (in general) doesn't have to tie up every single thing, but it at least has to let you know if the characters are real or just figments of a diseased body/mind, as the author suggests Cole might be! Is he real? Is Tess going to survive? And what actually happened to the world? I needed a little more.

I will definitely read more by this author.
It appears there is a sequel coming in 2016, so hopefully that will wrap things up a bit more, but my 3 star review largely reflects the fact that the book simply felt much too unfinished. Angela Scott is a talented writer and has crafted a very good story in "Anyone?"; but the plot felt too unclear with too many threads left hanging at the end. I hope the sequel will address those and give another taste of Angela Scott's ability to craft an intriguing story.

Tess's world comes to a shatter halt when fire suddenly rains down from the sky. Her prepper father hustles her out to their backyard shelter and orders her to lock the door and only unlock it when he returns with her brother. But days and then weeks pass and still her father doesn't return. Finally, Tess decides she must set out after him and begins to make her way across a dystopian, post-apocalyptic landscape in search of her family.

It is an entertaining and well-written dystopian fiction, easily would have been 4 stars if it hadn't felt so unfinished at the end.
